Men’s Health: Mind and Body
Unfortunately, a large percentage of busy men like me have ‘health’ listed on the lower end of our priorities. When life gets hectic, it’s important we still find daily productive “me time” to benefit our health. Keeping up with good habits can help us drastically decrease our risk for critical illnesses. For Men’s Health month, I’d like to share just how you can keep your mind and body in great shape. First, let’s discuss some disturbing facts about men‘s health.
- Men are 24% less likely to have visited the doctor within the past year.
- 40% of men wait until they’re experiencing symptoms before going to the doctor.
- 60% of men don’t go to the doctor at all.
It’s time we stop ignoring the signs of our current state of health and do something. Diet is one way to start making immediate improvements. We should ask ourselves, am I eating enough fresh produce? Am I eating too many fats and sugars? Let’s face it, we aren’t perfect, but we can make better choices that will vastly impact our health in the long run. For example, if you have a sweet tooth like me, try eating fruit instead.
Besides diet, keeping the body active is key. Here are some tips for getting in shape:
- Work out at work. There are multiple exercises you can do from the comfort of your desk: lunges, arm circles, or even desk push-ups. If you have time, try hitting the gym during your lunch break.
- Try a new class. Break out of your comfort zone and try something new, like yoga, spinning or even swimming. The options are endless.
- Have fun with your workout. Working out can seem like a chore, so it’s important you make it enjoyable to keep up a routine. Try listening to a playlist of your favorite songs or watching your favorite TV shows. Time flies when you’re having fun.
- Find a fitness buddy. My workout partner is my wife. Working out with a partner can keep you motivated and excited about burning those extra calories. You’ll also help hold each other accountable.
- Switch up your workout. Create a variety of workouts you like to prevent boredom and activate different muscle groups through different activities. I recently added cycling to my routine, and I love it!
It takes a strong mind to have a strong body, but you also need to exercise your brain just like your muscles in order to stay sharp. Keeping your mind clear, strong, and active can be extremely beneficial to you. It can influence your performance at work, how you interact with friends and family, and how you think about things on a daily basis. For a good “brain workout”, try brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand to add concentration to an otherwise mindless task, or any of the following:
- Word Games
- Riddles and Brain Teasers
