Cancer-Fighting Superfoods

Body building and super health food selection with supplement powders in bowls and spoons over lokta paper background. While there is no legal or medical definition for superfoods, they are considered nutrient powerhouses with a concentration of  antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. Some nutritionists recommend them, along with a healthy diet, to strengthen your ability to fight infection and disease. Specifically, some research has shown that the following superfoods may help boost your body’s natural ability to prevent cancer.
Remember, always consult with your doctor before making any changes to your diet.

Spirulina

Otherwise known as green-blue algae, is used to help boost the immune system. Spirulina’s high chlorophyll content may explain its ability to stop cancer colonies from forming. One of many health food brands that sells spirulina powder is BoKU®

Broccolisunday-3

All cruciferous vegetables (Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy, kale) contain cancer-fighting properties, but broccoli contains the most amount of sulforaphane. This is a particularly potent compound that may boost the body’s protective enzymes and flush out cancer-causing chemicals. Try adding broccoli into your diet more regularly, even if it ends up on your pizza.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain lycopenea carotenoid that gives this fruit their red hue, and has been found to stop some cancer cell growth. In fact, the biggest benefits come from cooked tomatoes (pasta sauce), since the heating process increases the amount of lycopene the body is able to absorb. Beware of processed tomato productsthese will have significantly less health benefits.

Blackberries, in particular, contain very high concentrations of phytonutrients called anthocyanins. They may slow down the growth of premalignant cells and keep new blood vessels from forming (and potentially feeding a cancerous tumor).

Garlic

This may be surprising, but the phytonutrients in garlic have been found to halt the formation of carcinogens formed in the stomach (and in the intestines, in certain conditions). In fact, the Iowa Women’s Health Study found that women with the highest amounts of garlic in their diets had a 50 percent lower risk of certain colon cancers than women who ate the least.
